About Laptop Studio
Laptop Studio is run by me, Bennett McElwee. I have been playing around with making music on a computer for a while now — my first serious music software was a MIDI sequencer program on an old Mac more than 10 years ago. Since then I have tried many more programs and even a few hardware synths. These days, I prefer to use software where possible, since it’s easier to set up and update. It’s also cheaper (which is very important).
There’s a lot of music software coming out all the time, and it can be hard to keep track of it all. There are some neat bits of music hardware suitable for home recording too. Also, there are so many features in modern music software that it can take a long time just to learn to use it properly. And I always try not to forget that the whole point is to make music! Sometimes it’s hard to find the time.
I put this site together to try to keep track of all the new software and other products, and to generally keep up with the world of software-based music creation. Most of the information here is aimed at people like me, who are interested in making music at home on a computer but don’t want to spend many thousands of dollars. So I don’t talk much about $5,000 software workstations or $10,000 piano synthesizers. Mostly I just keep tracks of announcements and reviews of new music software products, with some essential hardware too. There’s also some other related stuff: relevant music reviews, tips and news.
So, I started this site to hopefully give myself more motivation to make music. I hope it works for you too.
